Heat Advisory

High Heat
Post Date:07/16/2015 3:05 PM
Highs today will be in the mid 90s for much of the area, with lower 90s at the coast, then highs trend to the upper 90s by Saturday with lower 90s at the coast. Similarly hot afternoon temperatures will occur on Sunday and several inland locations may hit 100 both Saturday and Sunday.

Heat indices trend higher into this weekend, with values of 105-107 this afternoon followed by values around 108 on Friday then around 110 on Saturday and Sunday. Monday will not see much relief with heat index values around 108 expected.

Our local criteria for a Heat Advisory is for heat indices of 108 or when air temperatures rise to 103F. We issue an Excessive Heat Warning for heat indices of 113 or greater or when air temperatures rise to 105F. While we are not expecting air temperatures of 103F or greater, heat indices will be sufficient for a Heat Advisory for most of the area at least from Friday into Sunday, possibly into Monday as well. It is possible that an Excessive Heat Warning may be required for parts of the area this weekend for heat indices near 113.

Note: while heat indices of 105 to 107 are expected today, stay tuned for possible updates along with the potential issuance of a Heat Advisory should newer data indicate heat indices of 108 or higher.
